When the young geisha Cio-Cio-San marries the American naval officer Pinkerton, she believes that she is entering into a real, binding marriage for life. When she gives up her religion and her community, she learns too late that her marriage is just an illusion for Pinkerton - with tragic consequences. To this day, Puccini's opera with its passionate music, such as Butterfly's famous aria "Un bel dì, vedremo" ("One fine day") and the "Summchor", is captivating and ultimately heartbreaking. The exquisite staging by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier is inspired by 19th century European images of Japan. Asmik Grigorian plays the role of Cio-Cio-San, Kevin John Edusei conducts.
