Der mittellose Lyriker Gil Taylor erhält die einmalige Chance auf einen lang erhofften Beitrag für die Morning Post beim örtlichen Gericht. Dort trifft er auf die wegen Vagabundierens angeklagte Ann Garden. Gil hat Mitleid mit der jungen Frau und heiratet sie kurzentschlossen. Doch das Zusammenleben als Ehepaar wider Willen hält jede Menge Ärger bereit…

Gil Taylor, actually a poet, is tricked by his colleagues at the Morning Post, Stoddard and Frank: he is assigned to work as a reporter at the magistrate's court. There, verdicts are handed down every minute – and Gil takes pity on a young vagrant, whom he then passes off as his bride. The judge wants to get the matter out of the way and quickly marries Gil to Ann Garden, a complete stranger to him. And pretty soon they start arguing... She moves into his apartment, but the bed is divided between them by the window sill full of cacti. In all the confusion, Gil completely forgets to inform his own newspaper, and so the next day, the Morning Post is the only paper that does not report on the sensational quickie wedding. Gil is fired, as are his friends Frank and Stoddard, who stand by him. Now the four of them are dependent on each other, but unfortunately they lose their last money betting on horses. Ann, however, begins to ensnare Gil and slowly lets him realize that she might be the millionaire's niece who has been reported missing in the newspapers for days. After all, like the missing woman, she has a small square mole on her shoulder. Frank and Stoddard are inspired; the reward offered and the great story they have on their hands could be their lucky break. But Gil is angry: because Ann, with whom he has quietly fallen in love, now seems to him to be a rich and spoiled brat who has been playing with him all along and just trying to relieve her own boredom...
